Black Crappie
Yellow Perch adapt well to small ponds and lakes. Yellow
Perch are a predator fish and need forage to survive. They will
also take to commercial fish food. They will compete for food
with Largemouth Bass, so when stocking Perch with Bass,
you must consider stocking more forage fish to keep your
pond in balance. Yellow Perch have an excellent flavor and
are considered one of the best tasting fresh water fish
available.
Black Crappie do very well in farm ponds. They spawn
early in the spring and can produce several thousand fry.
Crappie have a tendency to over populate farm ponds.
However, a balance can be achieved when stocked with
Largemouth Bass. Small Crappie are consumed a food
source by Largemouth Bass and will be kept under
control by feeding Bass. Stocked in combination with
Bass, Crappie can be stocked and enjoyed by all.
Crappie are also a predator fish and will compete for food
with Bass. More forage fish should also be considered
when stocking Crappie with Bass. Black Crappie are fun
to catch and very good to eat.
